Fall Colors

Here are a couple of pictures that I took this evening as the sun was going down. Besides the usual assortment of fall foliage, the light gave all of the plants a soft and glowing quality. And the maiden grass blooms looked really cool, swaying softly with the breeze.

The sun was setting quick and I was scrambling to get a couple of more shots before it went down behind the big stand of firs at the back of the property. I got a couple of nice shots of the New Zealand Flax. Really nice colors...

Harvest

The weather is turning colder by the day. We're expecting a low of 34 degrees on Friday night. It happens so quickly. Today, we were scurrying around the garden trying to pick what we still could before it gets too cold.

It was a beautiful afternoon and I couldn't help but reflect on what a great year it was in the garden. So much good food. Fresh food. And it was so fun... starting off working in a new layer of worm castings and manure in February.... and ending up with a beautiful garden, ripe for the picking all summer long.

Why another garden blog?

Good question! And the answer is simple. We want to be an interactive component of our community. In other words, we want to talk to you. Specifically, about gardening.
Some of the things that interest us are horticulture in general, including, but not limited to...Soil, soil microbes, nitrogen fixation, compost, compost tea, earthworms, vermiculture, rain catchment systems, drought tolerant plants, native (PNW) plants, trees, shrubs, perennials, tropicals, you-name-the-plant and we're interested in talking about it!
We're also very interested in sustainable gardening practices, landscape design for public and private spaces, bringing people together to learn about the world around us, being involved with our community, harvesting fresh vegetables from the garden, cooking with fresh foods, and much, much more.
The list goes on and on. But we're going to have to start somewhere, so we are proposing to post on different and varied subjects all the time. One day we may be talking about worms and the next day it could be a recipe for dill pickles. Who knows? And that is what is going to make this so much fun. We hope that you participate in the conversations and that we all learn along the way.
