What a difference a month makes! We've accomplished something here folks. The last time we posted pictures it was just a field full of perennial grasses that we did nothing with... now, it's full of vegetable starts. Lots and lots of vegetable starts...
We imported probably close to 50 yards of compost that we have made here at the nursery and created berms with a central pathway for access. The compost is both nutrient rich and well drained, though we will have to add nitrogen throughout the season. We will be top dressing with aged manure and earthworm castings as well as using our liquid seaweed and fish fertilizers. This season we will apply compost tea drenches and foliar sprays as we continue to investigate different methods of cycling nutrients in our soils. We will also add worm towers to all of the beds. We've also created more surface area to plant into by making the berms...

Last night we got together and pulled a lot of weeds and did a bulk of the planting. It was hot yesterday and everyone was pretty tired from working in the heat all day. Usually it cools down in the evening here in western Oregon, so by the time we started to work, it was actually pretty nice.

We still have more to plant, but already we have a huge amount of starts in the ground. The weather has been so nice and warm lately that the plants should really take off quickly. I haven't measured the soil temp, but it certainly feels warm. Good for root growth! I will continue to post pictures as the garden grows. This is going to be a whole lot of fun!
